Lactation Cookies for the Holidays

Looking for something sweet? Try one of these tasty lactation cookie recipes as part of your holiday baking. A fun way to spend time with your partner or other friends or family members, baking these delicious cookies can be a nice way to treat yourself during a holiday season full of breastfeeding or pumping.

The word galactagogue comes from the Greek words for “milk promoting” and these substances are foods, herbs, and other things that are known or thought to help the body produce milk. There isn’t much scientific data on lactation cookies, but we have some clinical evidence that some of the ingredients in lactation cookies can help your milk supply—cows have been shown to produce more milk when given brewers yeast—and anecdotally many mothers say the same is true for lactating humans. Brewer’s yeast is a common galactagogue in lactation cookies, as well as oats, which are rich in iron.
